Art Books keep coming

There are 4 new art books: 2 on photography and 2 on painting:

Mastering Black and White Photography by Bernhard Suess gives a history of photogarphy and the camera and then gives specific ideas and techniques for taking better photos in its original color scheme: black and white.

Photographing the Weather by by Storm Dunlop (perfect name for the subject) takes us to the place all photographers have gotten to: wow that is pretty, how do I capture it. Lots of ideas and images.

Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter by Steve Allrich approaches painting with honest intent and not too many mandatory rules. Easy going and starts at the beginning, but would ge great for a more experienced painter as well.

Brushwork Essentials: How to render Expressive form and texture with Every Stroke by Mark Christopher Weber demonstrates multi-color loading, proper angle techniques and a discussion of bush differences. Full of beautiful color photographs, paintings and examples.

Spanish books for college aged students

We received 5 books written in Spanish, but at a beginner's reading level. The Spanish teacher wanted some books our first year Spanish students could read but they couldn't be children's books. I think we found some great ones, a series in fact.

They are called
Pobre Ana bailo tango
Mi propio auto
Et viaje de su vida
Patricia va a California
Pobre Ana

I took two years of Spanish in High School and none in college. I can mostly follow along, so I am sure you could if you are taking a Spanish class.

Someone Else's Shoes

Some of the new books we received recently allow readers to step into someone else's life. Among these are Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Coming of Age in Mississippi and Black Like Me. I grouped these three books together because of the haunting and stark stories they tell from the lives of people discriminated against and worse. They are in the library now and ready to be checked out.

Animal Reference Books

We have some cool new additions to our Reference Collection. They are Walker's Mammals of the World ( 2 volumes, 6th edition) and Whales, Dolphins and Other Marine Mammals of the World. Both are full of photographs and drawings to connect and inform animal lovers to the wonderful creatures we call mammals.

Medical ( I think) books

At least a LVN student who saw them was pretty excited about them:

Color Textbook of Histology by Gartner and Hiatt is a color-on-every-page book delving into the science of cellular and molecular biology.

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors
by Jean-Pierre Changeux and Stuart Edelstein is a book decades in the making which reviews and explores future uses for the Nicotine receptors.

Dosage Calculations for Medical Careers by Haddix and Whaley will prove an invaluable tool for our LVN and RN students here on campus. It comes with colored photos of many perscriptions and a CD-Rom for even more information.

All these books can be checked out for three weeks at a time.

How to Art Books

We recently decided to increase our art section and I asked the art teachers what books they would like us to purchase. They in turn asked the people whose opinions matter most at a college: the students. They requested books about how to use art techniques better, rather than books about specific artists. So here is the first batch of technique art books:

Advanced Digital Black and white Photography by John Beardsworth

The Potter's Studio Handbook by Kristen Muller

Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery by Burne Hagarth

Painting Class: Oil by David Sanmiguel

Problem Solving for Oil Painters by Gregg Kreutz

Design Basics by David Lauer and Stephen Pentak

How to Make Watercolor Paint Itself by Nita Engle

Keys to Drawing by Bret Dodson

and Creating Texture in Watercolor by Cathy Johnson

New Books for the Library

We just received three big boxes of books! I will be reviewing and listing them here on the blog over the summer. Come in and check one out!

The first two I am describing are about Corrections:
Criminology by Larry J. Siegel is the textbook for one of our criminology classes. It can be checked out until we start teaching the class, at which time it will be put on reserve. Your chance to read it is now.

Corrections by Frank Scxhmalleger and John Ortiz Smykla is also a text. It features detailed information about the work of a CO and how to survive and thrive your job at the prison. This is also a three week checkout until we teach a class on the subject.

Check here tomorrow for more new books!
